As well as an active career as a performer, I also keep my own private studio and work as a private instructor. I’m accepting piano students of all ages and ability levels, and I teach harmony, theory, jazz, and improvisation to students of any instrument. I’ve given individual instruction, taught masterclasses, and coached groups at Butler University, the University of Indianapolis, the Park Tudor School, Bloomington North High School, and through my own private studio at home.
I practice a holistic approach to private instruction that incorporates listening, music theory, and a little bit of history, as well as a study of the piano, technique, and repertoire. I feel that understanding the why of music is the key to understanding the how, and that learning more about what the student is studying leads to a deep emotional connection what they are playing, and by extension, faster progress (and more fun!)
I’ve taught a large range of students — I’ve taught beginning piano to young children, prepared serious students for college and competition auditions, and taught jazz to adult students who were already professional pianists. Private students of mine have been accepted to major music programs and conservatories, such as the Eastman School of Music, and some have received honors and awards at state-level music competitions.
